DSS expansion: what the latest figures mean for families

48 schools have approval to join the scheme; 170 non-local students on student visas are enrolled on a self-financing basis. Understanding what each figure measures is the first step.

Education Bureau reports progress on the DSS expansion pilot

In its 21 October column, the Education Bureau reported that 48 DSS schools had approval to join the expansion scheme. The September headcount recorded 170 non-local students on student visas enrolled on a self-financing basis, up 13% from the previous year.

Seven schools admitted non-local students in both years, while another seven admitted overseas students this school year. Approval to participate and actual overseas enrolment measure different things.

The Bureau also described work to support a code of practice for accommodation facilities. This does not mean every participating school already provides boarding.

Translate policy figures into questions about your child’s application

Expansion news can identify schools worth exploring, but it cannot predict an offer. Participation, curriculum provision, available places and eligibility still need to be checked with each school.

Ask four practical questions: which application route applies, whether the target year has vacancies, how annual costs are calculated, and what accommodation or care is available. A comparison based on those answers is more useful than the headline total.

Your next steps

  1. Confirm the application route and type of school place.
  2. Ask about curriculum, vacancies, fees and accommodation.
  3. Keep the current prospectus and record the actual submission deadline.
